Walkin'

That's the speed plot of Jill's ride so far. It definitely indicates some bike pushing and slow conditions. It appears things got slow right around Flathorn Lake. The Race Update indicates there is drifting snow in open areas (like an open lake!) on top of the freshly fallen stuff.

She rolled into the first checkpoint, Yentna Station, at about 2:40am according to the SPOT (the leaderboard has not been updated with an official time). By contrast, last year she made Yentna by 9pm -- about six hours slower! I'm sure she's taking it all in stride, and remember that last year trail conditions in the first portion of the race were just about ideal, so slower is expected.

I haven't yet seen indication that Jill, Geoff or Billy have progressed beyond Yentna yet. I'll keep watching.

Thanks Scott! Are there any updates? My Spot update shows several hours with no movement? kb

Wow... show's that Jill and Geoff scratched. Horrible. I wonder what happened. Man I feel for them right now.

Maybe Jill forgot that she has to reactivate the tracking feature once each 24 hours? Hope everything is okay.

just saw the scratch... hope you 2 are ok

Yep, the leaderboard shows both Jill and Geoff as having scratched in Yentna. That explains the lack of SPOT movement today.

As of right now I don't have any info other than this, sorry folks.

Both scratched, that sucks. I wonder if she got sick, or had mechanical problems with the bike or the new wheels ?. All that training and didn't even make it 1/4 way to the finish.

From Alaska Ultrasport News: Click Here!
"It has been an eventful day here for me since I have been in McGrath. There have been some scratches in Yentna. Riccardo Ghirardi had problems with his knees and decided to stop here. Geoff Roes also had knee issues. Jill Homer stepped into some overflow last night and as some frostbite on her toes. As far as I know it is minor, but not continuing on is a good decision to prevent further damage to the toes. Three of them flew out to Willow and Geoff and Jill are staying with friends in Palmer."

Sorry to hear. )O: Hope those toes and knees are feeling better!

Take care of those toes Jill. Even minor frostbite is nothing to play around with!

Be well.

An update on Jill's condition -
I just talked to her from the hospital in Palmer where she is having her toes checked out. Unfortunately, she stepped in some open water last night on Flathorn Lake. By the time she got into CP1, she had sustained some frostbite on her right toes. We are hoping it is not serious and should know after the doctors check her out. Thanks to everyone for their concern.

oh man, overflow is bad news. i can see how that could easily happen when traveling at night, it's easy enough to step/fall in even in the daylight. overflow is dangerous!

Take care, you guys. If you need anything as pass through Anchorage let me know - I will be here until Sunday night.
